Global Map: Coronavirus Traced to Iran

The spread of COVID-19, widely believed to have originated in China, has had severe repercussions across the globe. Coronavirus cases traced to Iran have shown up in at least 23 countries – from the United States and Europe to the Middle East and New Zealand – spread either by their own nationals who recently visited Iran or Iranian tourists.

Several countries have imposed travel restrictions on those who have traveled to Iran for fear of contagion. On March 5, China reported 11 new cases of people who had flown in from Iran. Despite the outbreak, air travel between Iran and China continued. China has remained one of the Islamic Republic’s most important trading partners since the United States reimposed sanctions in November 2018. The map below charts countries with confirmed cases traced to Iran.
