Iran’s Revolution at 43: In Photos

On February 11, Iran marked the 43rd anniversary of the Islamic Revolution with rallies in some 4,500 cities and towns, although most were outdoor parades of cars, motorcycles and bicycles, with few people participating on the streets. The annual commemoration normally draws tens of thousands to hear official speeches at public gatherings. President Ebrahim Raisi addressed the nation at an indoor venue with a masked audience in spread out rows.

Despite health protocols, the atmosphere was generally celebratory, according to local media. Families decorated their vehicles with flags or photographs of the late revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei or General Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the Qods Force killed in a U.S. drone strike in 2020. Some demonstrators burned American and Israeli flags and held signs that read, “Death to America” and “We will resist until the end.” The following are photos from the Islamic Republic’s 43rd anniversary.
