On March 1, 2024, Iranians elected 290 members for parliament and 88 senior Islamic jurists for the Assembly of Experts. Iranians posted photos and videos of empty polling stations in Tehran and other major cities. The government kept polls open for an extra six hours to encourage people to vote, but many stayed away due to apathy or dissatisfaction with the government, according to experts. The turnout was only 41 percent – the lowest since the 1979 revolution. Yet the mood inside some of the poll stations was festive. Families and friends queued together and posed for photos with inked fingers indicating that they had voted. The following are scenes from election day across Iran.
