Revolution at 40: Poll on Economy, Nuclear Deal

The majority of Iranians say the economy is bad and is getting worse, according to a new survey by IranPoll, an independent research company based in Toronto, Canada. Some 85 percent of those interviewed said European countries were “moving slowly” to trade and invest with Iran because of U.S. pressure. The United States withdrew from the nuclear deal in May 2015 and reimposed waves of sanctions that have made it difficult for international companies to do business with Iran without risking financial penalties.

President Hassan Rouhani and his government promised citizens that they would see tangible economic benefits as a result of the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). But after nearly three years of implementation, 81 percent of Iranians said people’s living conditions had not improved. Despite this sentiment, about half of those surveyed that they still somewhat or strongly approved of the JCPOA.

IranPoll interviewed 1,017 Iranians via telephone on December 4-12, 2018. The margin of error was +/- 3.1 percent. The following are key results.
