Poll 2: Rouhani’s Standing, 2017 Election

President Hassan Rouhani will be up for reelection in May 2017. His popularity peaked in August 2015 with an 89 percent favorability rating just after the nuclear deal was brokered between Iran and the world’s six major powers. As of December 2016, however, only 68 percent of Iranians viewed him favorably, according to a new poll by the Center for International and Security Studies at Maryland (CISSM) and IranPoll.com.

The economy will likely be the key issue in the election, as unemployment was the top concern cited by 31 percent of respondents. But Iranians are roughly split as to whether the economy is getting better or better or worse under Rouhani. The following are key results from the poll of 1,000 Iranians conducted in December 2016. The study authors were Ebrahim Mohseni, Nancy Gallagher and Clay Ramsay.
